There is no doubt growing up in high school in Kentucky in the 90s that I idolized Rick Pitino. He brought UK basketball to prominence and gave an up tempo style that made games ultra exciting to watch. McCarty, Delk, Mashburn, Anderson, Mercer not to mention the Unforgettables made Kentucky basketball an exciting topic year round. However much rumors swirled about his infidelities when he was the coach at UK they were always just that... rumors. I always said if JoAnn is sticking with him then…

Charles Spurgeon said, if we think of what we've vowed to be and of what we have become, we may weep whole showers of grief. Are we living the life that we promised ourselves and God or are we wasting our gifts? Derek Webb's song "Wedding Dress" is an excellent critique of us all and our using of God for our selfish purposes . Do we just put God on whenever we think it is convenient and useful for us? Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

It's been far too long since anyone posted anything, so I thought I'd quote the 18th century missionary David Brainerd whose dedication to the Lord's service both convicts and inspires me. He wrote the following in his diary which I quote out of John Piper's book, The Hidden Smile of God.
"When I really enjoy God, I feel my desires of Him the more insatiable, and my thirstings after holiness the more unquenchable... Oh, for His holiness! Oh, for more of God in my soul! Oh, this pleasing pain! I…

For everyone who has read the posts in this series and the series on MacArthur and Driscoll I would commend the
Dictionary of Biblical Imagery to you. It is written by several highly respected scholars, it was published long before the debate between Driscoll and MacArthur began, and I think it does well to explain the imagery found within…

A Charles Spurgeon quote to give you all food for thought:
The power that is in the gospel does not lie in the eloquence of the preacher: otherwise men would be the converters of souls. Nor does it lie in the preacher's learning; otherwise it would consist in the wisdom of men. We might preach until our tongues rotted, till we would exhaust our lungs and die, but never a soul would be converted unless the Holy Spirit be with the Word of God to give it the power to covert the soul.
Always a goo…

I thought this would be an appropriate post considering that I have been going through prayer on Sunday nights and The Sermon on the Mount on Thursdays... Consider this prayer while meditating on the Beatitudes. I think they go quite nicely together.
Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly, Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision, where I live in the depths but see Thee in the heights; hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold Thy glory. Let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up, th…

Perhaps no Christian in the last two hundred years has been so quotable as Charles Spurgeon. He is always a good read and there are many days I wish I had been alive to hear him preach. On a Saturday night before our coming together for corporate worship I just wanted to give a Spurgeon quote for thought... "The preacher's work is to throw sinners down into utter helplessness that they may be compelled to look up to Him Who alone can help them." Pray that is what will be heard tomorrow morning a…

I never really thought I would agree with open theist Gregory A. Boyd; but, as a far as his critique of this new addition to the field of study Bibles is concerned, I wholeheartedly agree. Head on over to
Christianity Today and check out part one of his review of…

“
Facebook: Connecting Us in Life and Death” is an interesting article that explores how Facebook, and I would add other online communities as well, “is changing not only the way we hear about deaths, but the way we mourn them as well.” If you have not experienced the death of a friend on Facebook or found out about the death of a friend via Facebook you will soon enough, because of this I think this art…

For many years many topics have been taboo in the pulpit. Speaking about the joy of sex for married couples as a gift from God is one of these. Baptists and alcohol (unless of course you are speaking of the devil's brew... bring back the 18th Amendment) is another. Why do we refuse to talk about these difficult subjects and how they relate to the Christian? Lack of contextualization is a large part of this equation, however not for the reasons perhaps first thought. We as Christians over the las…

Let say first thing that I respect both of these men. However, I do think that there is much damage being done to Christians in this spat. I am going to get straight to the point. I think that MacArthur is very wrong here. Driscoll certainly has made some mistakes, however, God is using him as a powerful tool for Kingdom Growth in both Seattle and to all who listen to him on the web. His mistakes are much more public due to his popularity. MacArthur as well is not perfect and has made mistakes b…

As a friend and I talked over lunch yesterday the irritating topic of the MacArthur vendetta against Mark Driscoll came up in conversation. Not irritating because he brought it up... its interesting to talk about, but irritating that this is happening. MacArthur is one of the 10 most influential pastors of the 20th century, however I am quite concerned with the current dialogue and frenzy he is whipping up against Mark Driscoll. It is not that MacArthur is making bad points necessarily, but the…

Is there such a thing as theology to be found in economics? Do the two subjects have anything to do with one another or are they mutually exclusive? Is Tertullian's statement "What does Athens have to do with Jerusalem" apply here? I think not. One of the biggest problems in this current economic mess is the failure to realize the underlying causes of all economic turmoil. This lack of thought or lack of perception of the true reality is causing nothing but half baked self serving solutions.
Whe…
