Do morals matter?

There is no doubt growing up in high school in Kentucky in the 90s that I idolized Rick Pitino. He brought UK basketball to prominence and gave an up tempo style that made games ultra exciting to watch. McCarty, Delk, Mashburn, Anderson, Mercer not to mention the Unforgettables made Kentucky basketball an exciting topic year round. However much rumors swirled about his infidelities when he was the coach at UK they were always just that... rumors. I always said if JoAnn is sticking with him then… Continue

Quick Thought

Charles Spurgeon said, if we think of what we've vowed to be and of what we have become, we may weep whole showers of grief. Are we living the life that we promised ourselves and God or are we wasting our gifts? Derek Webb's song "Wedding Dress" is an excellent critique of us all and our using of God for our selfish purposes . Do we just put God on whenever we think it is convenient and useful for us? Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

Thirsting for God

It's been far too long since anyone posted anything, so I thought I'd quote the 18th century missionary David Brainerd whose dedication to the Lord's service both convicts and inspires me. He wrote the following in his diary which I quote out of John Piper's book, The Hidden Smile of God.

"When I really enjoy God, I feel my desires of Him the more insatiable, and my thirstings after holiness the more unquenchable... Oh, for His holiness! Oh, for more of God in my soul! Oh, this… Continue

Contextualization, Sex, and Preaching II

For everyone who has read the posts in this series and the series on MacArthur and Driscoll I would commend the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery to you. It is written by several highly respected scholars, it was published long before the debate between Driscoll and MacArthur began, and I think it does well to explain the imagery found… Continue

New Thought

A Charles Spurgeon quote to give you all food for thought:

The power that is in the gospel does not lie in the eloquence of the preacher: otherwise men would be the converters of souls. Nor does it lie in the preacher's learning; otherwise it would consist in the wisdom of men. We might preach until our tongues rotted, till we would exhaust our lungs and die, but never a soul would be converted unless the Holy Spirit be with the Word of God to give it the power to covert the… Continue

When sharing the Gospel with, (and demonstrating it to) loved ones, I find great comfort in the fact that God is the one who brings souls into His Kingdom and it does not depend upon my inadequate abilities of persuasion, nor can it. I am humbled…

Prayer

I thought this would be an appropriate post considering that I have been going through prayer on Sunday nights and The Sermon on the Mount on Thursdays... Consider this prayer while meditating on the Beatitudes. I think they go quite nicely together.Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly, Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision, where I live in the depths but see Thee in the heights; hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold Thy glory. Let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up,…See More

I am very concerned after watching Mark Driscoll's sermon no. 4 (His Garden) from the Peasant Princess. However, my concern is not for what you may think. I am very concerned that MacArthur has quoted from this sermon in "The Rape of…

I have read all the posts on the MacArthur/Driscoll issue on this sight and have just read MacArthur's The Rape of Solomon's Song series of posts. I do not doubt God has used Driscoll's ministry to further His Kingdom, but MacArthur…

Quotable Notables

Perhaps no Christian in the last two hundred years has been so quotable as Charles Spurgeon. He is always a good read and there are many days I wish I had been alive to hear him preach. On a Saturday night before our coming together for corporate worship I just wanted to give a Spurgeon quote for thought... "The preacher's work is to throw sinners down into utter helplessness that they may be compelled to look up to Him Who alone can help them." Pray that is what will be heard tomorrow morning…See More

Excuse Me While I Throw Up

I never really thought I would agree with open theist Gregory A. Boyd; but, as a far as his critique of this new addition to the field of study Bibles is concerned, I wholeheartedly agree. Head on over to Christianity Today and check out part one of his review of…See More

@Adam, I had ot heard that about the conferences. @Karla, MacArthur, in responseto indiviuals asking the same question, gives his reasoning behind the title of his series in the Part 4.

Am I the only one who thinks that maybe MacArthur's choice of his title ("The Rape of Solomon's Song") was insensitive to women who have been raped? I mean, sure, our culture seeks to dumb down everything, using the term…

Adam Neel commented on Adam Neel's blog post 'Contextualization, Sex, and Preaching I'
I would not disagree at all with the preaching of the Gospel... however, I think that is the fundamental problem. We are not preaching it or living it when we are removing ourselves from the world only to come out of hiding to give premiseless…
